In the midst of his journey home, Akhilesh Singh found himself facing an unforeseen catastrophe as the tunnel collapsed before him. "The tunnel collapsed in front of me, and there was a loud sound after which my ears went numb," he vividly describes, capturing the chilling moment of the incident.
Trapped with no contact from the outside world for 18 hours, Akhilesh Singh and his fellow workers turned to their training for survival. Opening a water pipe became their lifeline, signaling distress. "In accordance with our training, we opened a water pipe as soon as we were confined. When the water started falling, the people outside understood that there were people stuck and started sending us oxygen through that pipe," Akhilesh recounts, shedding light on their resourcefulness.
Rescuers, defying the challenges, managed to insert a steel pipe through the debris, becoming a beacon of hope for the trapped workers. Food reached them through the day, enough to sustain them for an unexpected 25 days. This unforeseen abundance underscored the resilience and strategic planning that characterized the rescue mission.
With the ordeal behind them, Akhilesh Singh and his comrades now look toward a period of healing."After the medical exams are completed, I intend to return home. I will then take a break for 1-2 months before deciding what to do next," he shares, emphasizing the importance of recovery.
Situated approximately 30 km from Uttarkashi, the Silkyara tunnel holds significance as a vital component of the central government's Char Dham all-weather road project. Stretching across 889 kilometers of the fragile Himalayan terrain, this project aims to enhance connectivity in the region.
The collapse of a portion of the tunnel on November 12 triggered a safety audit by the government.However, Akhilesh Singh sees it as an environmental tragedy for which there is no one to take responsibility, rather than as a blame game.
